Nepal vs. Bangladesh vs. India for knit basics: a 2026 sourcing comparison

By Santosh Rijal · Founder, Trishakti Apparel ·

With brands actively diversifying their apparel sourcing — over 80% of US fashion companies now source from 10+ countries, and most plan to add more — the question “where should we make our knit basics?” is live again. Here’s a practical, honest comparison of three South-Asian options for tees and polos.

Duty access into your market

This is where Nepal stands out. As an LDC, Nepal enters the EU, UK, and Canada duty-free under single-transformation rules. India lost EU GSP benefits years ago and faces standard duties; Bangladesh, also an LDC, enjoys similar duty-free access but graduates from LDC status around the same window as Nepal. For US buyers the picture is different: none of these three has duty-free US access for knit apparel, so the comparison there comes down to MFN rates plus whatever trade measures are current — a fast-moving picture in 2026 that your customs broker should price, not a blog post.

Scale vs. attention

Bangladesh and India are giants — enormous capacity, but their factories are built around large buyers and big minimums. Emerging and mid-size brands often struggle to get attention, low MOQs, or responsive communication. Nepal’s industry is smaller and less overbooked, which for the right buyer means dedicated capacity, lower minimums, and direct access to the people running your order.

MOQ and small-batch friendliness

If you need 300–500 pieces per style to test a range, a mega-factory in Dhaka or Tiruppur is rarely the right fit. Smaller Nepali factories are structurally better suited to low-MOQ, multi-style programs — the reality for most growing brands.

The honest trade-offs of Nepal

  • Landlocked — bulk sea freight routes via Kolkata/Vizag, so plan realistic lead times.
  • Smaller industry — fewer giant factories; best for small-to-mid programs, not 100k-piece single orders.
  • Fabric is often imported (from China) — which is fine for duty-free under single transformation, but worth understanding.

Who should consider Nepal

Nepal is a strong fit if you’re a brand, importer, or reseller selling into the EU/UK/Canada (where duty-free access is the real prize), you value low MOQ and a responsive partner over raw scale, and you’re diversifying away from over-concentration in China, India, or Bangladesh.

That’s exactly the lane we work in — private-label knit basics, low MOQ, duty-free-savvy. See what we make or start a conversation.

Quick answers

Is Nepal cheaper than Bangladesh for garments?
No — and honest suppliers say so. Bangladesh has lower wages and the same 0% duty into the EU, UK, and Canada. Nepal’s case is minimum order size, dedicated capacity, and attention — not beating Bangladesh on price.
Which country has the lowest MOQ for knitwear?
Small-factory origins like Nepal run around 1,000 pieces per style, while Bangladesh’s export hubs typically want 3,000–10,000. For brands testing styles, that difference decides the sourcing country.
Do India and Bangladesh get duty-free access to the EU and UK?
Bangladesh yes — 0% into both under EBA and DCTS. India enters the UK at 0% under the 2026 trade deal but still pays around 12% into the EU.
