एकसिंगे गैंडा · Meet our one-horned rhino
In Nepali a rhino is gaĩḍā. Our town, Gaindakot, is believed to be named after the rhinos that lived here before people settled.
They still live next door: Chitwan National Park, on our municipality’s border, is home to 694 of Nepal’s 752 one-horned rhinos (2021 census).
Fewer than 100 were left in the 1960s; about 4,075 live in Nepal and India today. That quiet, patient strength is what we mean by care in every stitch.

The flag of Nepal
The only national flag in the world that isn’t a rectangle — two stacked pennants, taller than it is wide. Its exact shape is set out step by step in Nepal’s Constitution.
- Crimson — bravery, and the rhododendron, Nepal’s national flower.
- Blue border — peace.
- Moon — the calm, gentle nature of the Nepali people. Sun — their fierce resolve. Together, a wish that Nepal endures as long as the sun and moon.
- Two peaks — often read as the Himalaya.

नमस्ते · Namaste
The everyday greeting of Nepal: palms pressed together at the heart and a slight bow of the head, offered instead of a handshake.
From Sanskrit namaḥ, “I bow”, and te, “to you”. Nepalis use it for hello, goodbye, thank you and respect.
गुन्यु चोलो · Gunyu cholo
She wears a gunyu cholo: the gunyu, a long patterned cloth worn like a sari, over a fitted cholo blouse, tied with a patuki (waist sash). Republica (source: President gifts gunyo-cholo to Balmandir girls: the gunyo is a long patterned cloth worn like a saree, the cholo is like a full blouse; set includes a patuki (sash), opens in a new tab)
Girls traditionally receive their first gunyu cholo at a coming-of-age ceremony, and many women weave dhaka into it, as in her cholo. The Kathmandu Post (source: The revival of Nepali Dhaka (17 Feb 2025): women integrated dhaka into gunyo cholo, worn at the coming-of-age ceremony, opens in a new tab)
ढाका · Dhaka
Dhaka is Nepal’s hand-woven cloth of bright geometric patterns, produced above all in Palpa. It became the dhaka topi, the national cap and a symbol of Nepali identity. The Kathmandu Post (source: Hand-woven Palpali dhaka makes colourful comeback: hand-woven geometric cloth, widely produced in Palpa; dhaka topi declared the national cap, opens in a new tab)
Nepal’s textile story also includes allo, hand-spun Himalayan nettle, and pashmina from the Kathmandu valley. Our own chapter is modern knitwear.
Nepal’s people
Nepal’s 2021 census counted 142 castes and ethnic groups and 124 mother tongues. The Kathmandu Post (source: Number of castes, ethnicities in Nepal increases to 142 (2021 census, National Statistics Office): 142 castes/ethnicities, 124 mother tongues, opens in a new tab)
Dress, festivals and food differ from one community to the next. The gunyu cholo is one tradition among many.

Teej falls in the Nepali month of Bhadra (August–September) and is celebrated mostly by Hindu women, who dress in reds, oranges and greens, fast, sing and dance, in the spirit of Parvati’s devotion to Shiva.
