Import duty from Nepal to India: calculator for clothing

Enter a price, quantity and freight to see what a piece costs in rupees when imported from Nepal, compared with the MFN rate paid from China, then pick the date you need stock and see when to order.

The rate above is the CBIC customs exchange rate for imports; CBIC revises it twice a month. Freight is an example: use your transporter’s quote. We confirm per style whether the 0% rate applies (the treaty’s 70%-of-FOB rule; Indian fabric counts as local).

Whole order of 2,000 pieces: ₹6,42,080 before IGST, plus ₹32,104 IGST, which a GST-registered business can usually take as input credit (check with your accountant).

The same garment at the 20% MFN rate, as from China, would pay ₹70.63 a piece in duty and surcharge, so the treaty rate saves about ₹1,41,258 on this order.

IGST is 5%, or 18% above ₹2,500 sale value per piece.

What Indian importers should know

Four things that decide your landed cost.

Duty is on CIF

Indian customs value goods at CIF: the price plus freight and insurance to the border. That is the base for basic customs duty, the surcharge and IGST.

0% needs the origin rule

Materials from outside Nepal and India must stay within 70% of the FOB price. Indian fabric counts as local, and we can source it for you. We confirm each style before you order.

IGST is usually credit

IGST is charged from every origin. A GST-registered business can usually take it as input credit, so the real saving is in basic duty and the surcharge.

By road, in days

Gaindakot is about 3 hours by truck from the Bhairahawa–Sunauli border, so stock reaches north India within days of dispatch, without sea freight.

Questions

Straight answers.

What is the import duty on clothes from Nepal to India?
Basic customs duty is 0% when the garments meet the Nepal–India Treaty of Trade (or SAFTA) rules of origin and travel with a Nepali certificate of origin. IGST still applies: 5%, or 18% above Rs 2,500 sale value per piece. At the MFN rate, as from China, a cotton T-shirt pays 20% basic duty, at least Rs 45 a piece, plus the 10% Social Welfare Surcharge on it.
How is IGST on imported clothing calculated?
IGST is charged on the assessable value (CIF) plus the basic customs duty and surcharge, at 5%, or 18% above Rs 2,500 sale value per piece. A GST-registered importer can usually take it as input credit, so confirm your position with your accountant or customs agent.
What does the calculator leave out?
Your customs agent’s fees and transport to your city, which you enter from a quote, plus any port or warehouse charges at the border. The freight figure is an example, and the exchange rate is CBIC’s customs rate, which changes twice a month. Until you add your own figures, the result is lower than your real cost.
How long from order to my warehouse in India?
About 9 weeks with a new sample on the safe plan: sample 7–14 days, courier and approval up to two weeks, bulk dispatched 25–30 days after approval, then about a week by road and border clearance to north India. With an approved sample it is about 5 weeks.
When does the 0% rate apply?
When the garment changes HS heading in Nepal, which making Chapter 61 garments from knitted fabric does, and materials from outside Nepal and India stay within 70% of the FOB price. Indian fabric counts as local. We check each style before you order and supply the certificate of origin with every consignment.
What is the minimum order for Indian buyers?
200 pieces per style and colour, with at least 1,000 pieces in the order. We deliver to the Nepal–India border or to your city, by agreement, and accept payment in INR or USD by bank transfer, or by Letter of Credit.
