Sourcing conversations are full of jargon — private label, white label, OEM, ODM. They describe *how much of the product is yours vs. the factory’s*. Here’s each in plain English.
The four models
- White label — a generic, ready-made product you put your label on. Fastest, least custom.
- Private label — the factory makes a product to *your* designs and spec, exclusively for your brand. Full control of design, fabric, fit.
- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) — the factory manufactures to your design/spec (essentially private-label production).
- ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) — the factory designs *and* makes it; you brand and sell it. Fastest to market with less design work.
Which fits you?
- Want it fast and simple, less differentiation → white label / ODM.
- Want your own designs, fabrics, and fits (a real brand) → private label / OEM.
- Short on time but want it “yours” → start with the factory’s proven designs (ODM), customise over time.
